Analysing Consumer Responses to Food Safety Results of a Survey in the Netherlands AgEcon
Dagevos, Hans; Hansman, Harrie.
Consumer confidence in food safety appears to be under pressure as a result of several food scandals and food scares in recent years. Regaining the trust of food consumers in food production and food products is talk of the town in both government buildings and agribusiness offices. Instead of talking about consumers, this article is first and foremost about what consumers themselves think and feel about food safety. The foundation of this research is a survey among nearly 1100 Dutch consumers. Investigation focuses on food safety from the consumer's perspective in which food safety is examined comprehensively. This manifests itself in the dependent variables this research takes into consideration. With respect to the independent variables, multivariate...

Closing the Gap: Communicating to Change Gardening Practices in Support of Native Biodiversity in Urban Private Gardens Ecology and Society
van Heezik, Yolanda M; University of Otago; yolanda.vanheezik@otago.ac.nz; Dickinson, Katharine J. M.; University of Otago; kath.dickinson@botany.otago.ac.nz; Freeman, Claire; University of Otago; cf@geography.otago.ac.nz.
Private gardens collectively comprise the largest green space in most cities and the greatest potential for increasing the extent of wildlife-friendly and native-dominated habitat, improving the quality of ecosystem services, and providing opportunities for urban dwellers to reconnect with nature. Because attitudes and values driving landscape preferences in gardens are complex and often not conducive to biodiversity, and a gap exists between the possession of knowledge or values and the expression of pro-environmental behavior, facilitating change in gardening behavior is challenging. We attempted to improve knowledge and influence values, attitudes, and gardening behavior of 55 householders in favor of native biodiversity and environmentally friendly...

Conservation of biodiversity in private lands: are Chilean landowners willing to keep threatened species in their lands? RChHN
Zorondo-Rodríguez,Francisco; Reyes-García,Victoria; Simonetti,Javier A.
BACKGROUND: The biological conservation in private lands largely depends upon landowners' willingness to keep populations of wild species on them, an issue highlighted by the Convention on Biological Diversity. In this study, we aim (i) to understand small landowners' behavioural intentions, or relative intensity to adopt a given behaviour, towards threatened wildlife and (ii) to assess the role of local ecological knowledge, awareness of protected area, and forest ownership on landowners' behavioural intentions towards threatened biodiversity. We interviewed peasants living around Los Queules National Reserve in Central Chile. RESULTS: Interview results showed that behavioural intentions towards threatened species were species-dependant. Results also...

Consumer Awareness, Perceptions and Behaviour Towards Farmed Versus Wild Fish AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Brunso, Karen.
This study provides empirical evidence about European consumer awareness, perceptions and behavior towards farmed and wild fish. The evidence is based on three empirical studies: a consumer survey in Belgium in March 2003, focus group discussions with consumers in Belgium and Spain in May 2004, and a pan-European consumer survey with a sample of 4,786 fish consumers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Span and Poland in November-December 2004. Consumer awareness about the farmed or wild origin of fish is rather poor, particular among lighter fish user groups. Perceptions are quite diverse across Europe. Furthermore, perceptions often contrast with current scientific evidence, in particular with respect to behalf and nutritional value where consumers...

Hedonic and Utilitarian Motives for Consumers’ Learning Processes: The GDA Food Label AgEcon
Puspa, Jofi; Kuhl, Rainer.
As one of the stimuli flows in the food market the GDA-labeling was established in 2007. The original concept of introducing this label was to provide information that may bring about more healthy eating patterns. Four years after launching it seems relevant to understand how well the consumers have adopted to that information. Consumer learning that occurs through exposure to external sources of information such as GDA-labeling can happen consciously or subconsciously, on a high involvement level or due to the presence of more conducive situation. Therefore understanding learning process and its substantiations such as utilitarian and hedonic motives are salient issues. This study has aims to understand learning process of GDA-label and to determine two...

STUDY OF YOUNG PEOPLE’S WINE CONSUMPTION HABITS AT THE CORVINUS UNIVERSITY OF BUDAPEST AgEcon
Farkas, Agnes.
The Hungarian wine market has been undergoing continuous transformation, one of the principal reasons of which is Hungary’s European Union membership since 2004. The main disadvantage coming from the membership is that foreign wines are no longer rare curiosities but they are present to an extent that they disturb the market and constitute significant competition (in addition to the substituent products of the wine) for the domestic wines. The current economic crisis may also present various risks to the industry, such as a drop in consumption or the increase in the consumption of foreign wines with a good price/benefit ratio. Since I consider it important to preserve the market dominance of the Hungarian wines in the domestic market, I did not address the...

Trust and attitude in consumer food choices under risk AgEcon
Graffeo, Michele; Savadori, Lucia; Lombardi, Luigi; Tentori, Katya; Bonini, Nicolao; Rumiati, Rino.
In this paper, attitude and trust are studied in the context of a food scare (dioxin) with the aim of identifying the components of attitude and trust that significantly affect how purchases are determined. A revised version of the model by MAYER et al. (1995) was tested for two types of food: salmon and chicken. The final model for salmon shows that trust is significantly determined by perceived competence, perceived shared values, truthfulness of information and the experiential attitude (the feeling that consuming salmon is positive), but trust has no impact on behavioural intentions. Consumer preferences seem to be determined by a positive experiential attitude and the perception that breeders, sellers and institutions have values similar to those of...
